SYMPOSIUM: Waste Not - Want Not!
The challenges of “waste” on Green Island - Doug Baird, Environmental Compliance Manager - Green Island
Green Island is a tropical coral cay located 27km North East of Cairns in Far North Queensland. The Island which is 12 hectares in size sits on a 710 hectare reef, due to its proximity to Cairns the Island has been popular with visitors since 1890. The first hotel was built on the Island in 1942 with the most recent redevelopment finished in 1994, the island infrastructure has to be able to cope with not only the maximum of 100 guests staying in 46 suites but also day visitors which can be up to 2240 per day, on average 350,000 visitors per year visit Green Island. Due to the uniqueness of the surrounding reef and the rainforest in the National Park on the Island, there is extensive Local, State and Federal legislation which govern all activities on the Island. The presentation will highlight the legislative requirements which had to be adhered to during redevelopment of the resort and the ongoing requirements and challenges regarding how we manage water, power and waste on the Island.
Sustainability - Why do it? - Chris Hill, Sustainability Manager, Mater Health Services, South Brisbane
The push for organisations; and every part of an organisation to become sustainable has continued to grow over the last few years and managers need to be aware of the many drivers and outcomes that can be achieved by incorporating more sustainable activities into their business. A review of current practice identifies many opportunities and the insights gained from others in our field who are already doing great work can be used to spark conversations within any work place. This talk will cover these issues and present a vision for the future where sustainability is a core theme within normal business practices.
“Waste to useful product” Advanced Resource Recovery Facility - Simon Gardner Lee, General Manager, Strategy & Sustainable Development, SITA Australia
With the introduction of the Federal Government's Carbon Pricing Mechanism on 1 July 2012, all waste deposited in landfills will be 'taxed' according to the amount of greenhouse gases emitted from this waste as it degrades over time. Organic waste produced from the healthcare sector - predominantly food waste from catering activities - will produce approximately 1.6 tonnes of greenhouse gases for every tonne of food placed in a landfill. This presentation will provide a summary of how
the Clean Energy Future Legislation will not only drive organics out of landfill disposal towards resource recovery due to this pricing signal, but that recovering these organics as compost for subsequent application to farming also reduces greenhouse gases in the farming sector by replacing chemical fertilisers.

PLENARY SESSION: You think you know what the problems is - Cathy Perrin, Lean Facilitator, Mater Health Services and David Terrill, Manager Food Services, Mater Health Services
Systems and processes in health care are often incredibly complex and it is often the case that no one person has a clear understanding of how the whole flow works. When confronted with an issue, the temptation is to find a quick ‘band aid’ solution to address the problem and move on to the next thing creating another complication in an already complex system. What’s the alternative? Lean Thinking provides a methodology and a variety of tools that assist in defining systems and process and identifying the root cause of problems and issues. These tools and techniques are scalable – they can be used on small, individual work unit problems as well as across whole-of-hospital processes. This presentation will cover some of the basics of Lean Thinking and provide some practical examples of how this methodology has been used at Mater Health Services to address issues in Ambulatory/ Outpatient services, perioperative services, private patient food journey, pathology specimen transportation and Health Records department.
